WHO AM I?;
BAXTER/GREGORY/NEFF/PURDY/MILLS? ? ?
This photograph was among my mother's things and is of an old gentleman, perhaps in his 70's or 80's. If you look carefully he appears to be blind in the left eye, possibly due to a cataract. The mounting the photo is in is from the Wilson studio in Walton. It was originally with Reginald Baxter's things, passed to Rose Madeline Baxter (my mother) via Millicent Beatrice Baxter (my Aunt). >Thanks, - Mike Martyn, May 1997 |
While I can't ID him, I see a huge resemblance between your unidentified settler photo and my ancestor Charles B.Stoddard, shown in this photo with his wife Roenah Powers Stoddard. Charles (b. Nov 1828) was the son of Heley Stoddard and his wife Betsey Bates Stoddard. He had a brother Henry (b. 1827) and a sister Almira (b. 1831 per census data, 1839 per gravestone). They were married in Dutchess Co, NY in 1826, and are next found in Deleware Co in the 1830 census in Franklin, where he is listed as Helia Stoddart. She is also shown as a member in good standing of the Baptist Church in Franklin in 1830. By the 1840 census they are in Chenango Co NY, and shortly thereafter relocated to WI. I have no knowledge of brothers or other relations of Heley Stoddard, but have wondered if there were relations among the Stoddards of Delaware Co. Boy does that photo look like my CB Stoddard! What do you think? --Donella Spencer, July 2002
