1. James Russell,^1,2,3 b. abt 1742, Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, (possibly the son of James Russell) d. 15 May 1809, Delaware Co, NY. Below is a letter received from James Russell in Scotland by his son's here in Bovina prior to his arrival in America. He mentions Uncle William also coming to America with his family. I believe that James b. abt 1742 and William b. 1733 are brothers although it has not been proven with documents other than this letter. I believe James b abt 1742 and his brothers, Matthew and Stephen were here in Delaware Co prior to their father, James and brother William. This would link the Russell's of Bovina with the Russell's in New Kingston.

This is an old letter addressed to Messrs. James & Matthew Russell in Stamford, County of Delaware, State of New York and care of: Samuel Hickt's, North America. February 13th 1801.

Dear Sons James & Matthew & Stephen;

I embrace this opportunity of the HURON, an American ship returning to New York, to inform you that we are all in good health, as also your concerns & acquaintance.

We rec'd yours both on the 23rd January, the very day a twelve month ago that we rec'd your former letter & were made glad by the information of your welfare, increase of family, prosperity and of Stephen's arrival.

As I intend by the middle of April or soon after that to take shipping for your place, you need not expect any more notice from me in an ordinary way until I bring it myself, I cannot as yet say whether any other of the family will accompany me or not, only Uncle William and his family will come and for his accommodation he desires you will prepare a temporary habitation for him on some convenient spot, as his family is rather numerous. (other side of paper) for going in with another family, likewise your friend JOHN ORR will accompany me.

Public matters in this place look no better, Markit's at an exorbitant price, Trading declining. I shall do as you directed in your letter as far as I can do.

I now conclude earnestly desiring you make a study to obtain an interest in the Covenant of Grace for your happiness in time and eternity and that you petition God's correction and protection for me in my Journey to you as intended.

My dear James Russell, My remembrance of you is still fresh and savory in my breast, both on your account and on my much respected and faithful friend, your father's account(with whom I will be sorry to part) the joyfulest account that will ever reach me will be that you are as a member of Christ's family, a pattern of sobriety and holiness in your family and might our Lord a zealous and unfeigned Christian in personal and social life. My wife desires you to let nothing in this world mar the service of the Lord and remember that as the Lord has carried you over the seas you must join in ___with ____ of the land where you are. Notes for MATTHEW RUSSELL: A Russell Family Bible in possession of Betty Russell Volk states: Matthew Russell born Scotland April 12, 1774 A Russell Family Bible belonging to Matthew Delos Russell in the possession of Kim states: Matthew Russell Sr. born March 20, 1774 In the 1800 Town of Stamford census it shows: Matthew Russell, one male 16 to 26. He is family # 144. Family 145 is James Russell showing 2 males 16 to 26, one female under 10 and one female 16 to 26. The History of Delaware County W.W. MUNSELL 1797-1880 THE TOWN OF BOVINA In 1802 Robert Scott built for Matthew Russell the first saw-mill and grist-mill. In 1833 it was abandoned and the building converted into a hop-house, and finally it is the hay-barn of James Johnson. Thomas H. Johnson now owns and operates the woolen-mills where, in 1803, Robert Scott built a saw-mill and grist-mill. Mr. Johnson's old mill is near the site of a grist-mill built in 1801 by Robert Scott for Matthew Russell, a pioneer. Stamford - 1800 Federal Census The Town of Stamford was erected as an Ulster County Town on April 10, 1792 by division of the Town of Woodstock - also an Ulster County Town. When Delaware County was erected on March 10, 1797, from part of the Counties of Ulster and Otsego, most of the Town of Stamford became one of the six original Towns thereof. On March 23, 1799, the Town of Stamford was divided to provide for the erection of Town of Roxbury. Richie John 116 Russel James 145 Russel Matthew 144 Biographical Review - Leading Citizens of Delaware Co., NY Matthew Russell, was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland, and, upon coming to America, sojourned for a time at Bovina, where he plied his miller's trade. From Bovina he removed to Middletown (New Kingston), bought a farm of one hundred and fifty acres, and built thereon a log dwelling-house and out-buildings. He cleared and improved the land; and, having carried out the injunction of the couplet which warns, "Before you marry, Be sure of a home Wherein to tarry." he was joined in holy wedlock to Betsey Cummings. They had four sons and one daughter, namely: James C., who married Eliza Dumond; Matthew G., who married Margaret Winters; Alexander, who married Mary Dumond; and John G.; and their sister, Margaret A., who died in early youth. Mrs. Betsey Russell died; and Matthew was again



	married to Miss Esther Blackman, by whom he had three children, whose brief record follows: Stephen married Hannah Wooden, Margaret Ann married Andrew Glendening, and Roswell married Betsey Russell. Russell, age 42; Eliza A. age 38, Rachel age 17, Matthew age 16, William age 14, Andrew age 12, James age 10, Robert age 7,Betsy Ann age 5 and Margaret age 1. There was a Henry Scott living with them, age 22. Don Pratt feels that James C.'s middle name is Cummings after his mother Betsy Cummings??? Russell, a son of Matthew by his first wife, was born in Bovina, April 25, 1822. Having learned the milling trade, he found employment as a miller for six years here before he began farming on a tract of one hundred acres of land, which he purchased near New Kingston, and which is now owned by his son Oscar. He remained on the farm for thirty-two years; and then, abandoning its active cares, he came to New Kingston, where he now lives, at nearly seventy-three years of age, quietly enjoying the reward of his long continued toil. On Christmas Day of 1845 he was married to Miss Jane Chisholm, who was a daughter of Andrew and Elsie Chisholm, and who became the mother of six children. She died at the age of sixty-nine, survived by five children, namely: Alice Jane, who married William Boggs, of Bovina, and has one child; Elizabeth E., wife of Sloan Archibald, a farmer in Bovina, they having two children; Margaret A., who died young; Andrew M., of New Kingston; John Oscar, a farmer, who married Miss Belle Thompson, and lives near New Kingston; and Mary Adelia, the wife of Arthur H. Russell, of Unionville, Mich., who has one child. Mr. John G. Russell married for his second wife Miss Elizabeth S. Miller, a daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Scott) Cowens, and a member of the United Presbyterian church. Sands and operated by Thomas Card. It stood on the site of Andrew Glendenning's house. Mr. Sands afterward put up an ashery, which at that time was quite an important industry. The custom of the early day was to gather the ashes from the burned log heaps and sell them at these asheries, of which there were several, where they were made into potash and pearlash for the market. The ashes were worth one shilling per bushel"
