There was once an inquiry about a baby cemetery in Margaretville area. This has puzzled me for a several years and I keep asking around with little success. With the help of a couple other folks we managed to find a person who said yes he could tell us where it was. He remembers as a younger man he was sent there to keep it mowed as it was a Town cemetery and he was employed as a town highway person, of whom did that work back then. We went to check it out. The site has all the possibilities of being just that. There are many field stone markers placed in close proximity, since a baby wouldn't require much space. The place I am referring to is at the
Gavette Cemetery in Kelly Hollow, Arena, New York. At the very top of the hill in the cemetery and to the right is an area that has all the earmarks of possibly being a baby cemetery. Of course there are no names on the stones and the area has been neglected for some time.
I had seen this area for many years in my research in that cemetery and really never gave those field stones much thought. Now I am excited that possibly we have solved a long time question on it’s existence. I am sure there are no records for this section and there is no way to confirm that it is in fact a baby cemetery. --Roger Davis, July 7, 2015
