There were two distinguished alumni from that building. A fledgling teacher, Charles Evans Hughes, was on his way to become the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Also, Miss Ida Saxton later became first lady to the 25th president of the United States, William McKinley. She was born and grew up at Canton, Ohio, a young beautiful lady with blue eyes and long hair. While WORKING in her father's bank, she met a young man studying law, who was a Major in the late Civil War. Unfortunately she had epilepsy and by 1873 after the birth of her second daughter was seriously ill. She was a confirmed invalid by 1876 but when Mr. McKinley was elected, they worked miracles to be by her side. At receptions, she was seated in a velvet chair holding a bouquet therefore not having to shake hands. The First Lady and her devoted husband were oblivious to any social problems. President McKinley served one full term and in his second he was assassinated at the Buffalo Pan American Exposition in September 1901. --
