Company I, 71st NY Volunteer Infantry

"Muster Roll of Captain William H. Elwood's Company I in the 71st Regiment, of New York State Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Geo. B. Hall, called into the service of the United States by the President of the United States, from the 27th day of June, 1861 - date of this muster - for the term of three years, or during the war, unless sooner discharged."
William H. Elwood enrolled a number of Delaware County men & boys in the Town of Colchester for military service. They were the second group to leave the County. They proceeded to Staten Island, N. Y. where they were consolidated with a Company from Great Valley, Cattaraugus County in the Brigade led by General Daniel Stickles and assigned to the 71st N.Y. Volunteer Infantry as Company I therein.
