DALES, Hugh   14 Nov 1808, to be called before the Session for "not conducting 
according to the Gospel" ; 23 Oct 1809, Session accepted a  "libel"  of this date by 
Jane Blakely in which James Sloan suspects Hugh Dales and Margaret Ferguson of  bad 
behaviour. they being in bed together some part of the night in sd.. Margt fathers 
house.  The "libel" also reports an "un-chaste Dialogue" between Dales and Sloan on 
their return from Daniel Ferguson s [who is probably Margaret s father]: 11 Nov 
1809, the above charges were tried with conflicting testimony being given by 
James Sloan, Elizabeth H. McLaughry, James H. McLaughry and Margaret Blakely. 
[Margaret Blakely's testimony is preceeded by the name "Margaret Dales". suggesting 
that these are the maiden and married names of the same person.] Betsey Ferguson is 
mentioned [in a manner which suggests that she is a sister of Margaret Ferguson].  
No trial outcome is given.

DALES, Margaret   14 Nov 1808, to be called before the Session for "not conducting 
according to the Gospel"; 11 Nov 1809, Hugh Dales Objected at his trial, on this 
date, to her being allowed to give 'evidence against him because of Subsisting 
Emmity between them.  Agreed to by the Court", i.e., the Session

On investigation by the Session, they admitted "the Sin and Scandal of antinuptial

HARKNESS, Thomas   3 Oct 1855, examined and admitted to communion

HARKNESS, Thomas J.   5 Jun 1845, was suspended from church privileges until the 
Session could investigate charges that he was guilty of intemperance; 8 Oct 1845, 
appeared before the Session on a charge of "quarreling at last town meeting."   He 
claimed not to have quarreled with anyone but  "had a few blows with Mr. Mead in 
Self defense."   Action was deferred; 11 Oct 1845, the Session dismissed the charge 
and restored his church privileges though it felt he "was Some to blame" and 
appointed a committee to caution him about his future conduct; 10 Oct 1850, Session 
appointed members to inquire into some "improper conduct" on his part: [sometime 
between 10 Oct 1850 and 5 Jun 1851], members reported to the Session that no further 
action was required; 6 Jun 1860. [probably the "Thomas Harkness"] to be "converse[d] 
with" by a committee of the Session about his "intemperance in the use of ardent 
spirits"; 9 Oct 1860, the committee reported to the Session that he admitted to the 
charge and appeared penitent and humble"

HARKNESS, William   12 Jun 1856, requested admission but was refused "on the 
supposition that he belongs to a secret society"; 17 Jun 1856, after the Session 
received "satisfactory information respecting his case" he was admitted to communion

HARPER, Henry   14 Nov 1808, Session voted to call him before it for "not conducting 
according to the Gospel"

HARPER, Henry   16 Jun 1841, nominated to be a Ruling Elder [but there is no record 
of his being elected to the office]

himself with the Northeastern seven"; [based on earlier minutes, it appears that the 
"seven" were dissidents who had left this church ]

Kilpatrick, which he denied and which had been referred back to the Session by the 
Presbytery, was postponed until the next meeting of the Session; 4 May 1807, 
Elizabeth Kilpatrick renewed her charge of fornication against him but, since Samuel 
was not present, the Session deferred action until its next meeting; 18 May 1807, 
the Session again considered his case.  Elizabeth Kilpatrick renewed her charge that 
Samuel was the father of her bastard child and stated that she "never knew" another 
man.  Samuel maintained his innocence and the Session concluded that the facts were 
so "murky" that it would defer any decision; 3 Aug 1807, Session decided to request 
the advice of the Presbytery at Newburgh in this case; 14 Nov 1808, his case 	was 
again considered by the Session; 25 Mar 1811, he was rebuked by the Session for 
"unlawful corespondence with. his wife before marriage

otherwise"; 27 Sep 1848, made a verbal complaint to the Session against Matthew 
Sixsmith but the matter was postponed; 22 May 1849, Session appointed the Moderator 
to visit him and discuss the complaint; 26 Sep 1849, Moderator reported the results 
of his visit and the 	Session postponed any action; 25 Rug 1852, he presented a 
paper complaining of the dishonesty of Matthew Sixsmith.  Session returned the paper 
to him since the matter was no longer under their jurisdiction, having previously 
been  before the Presbytery.  He was advised to drop the matter.

converse with him; [entry is partially illegible and the reason for this 
"conversation" can not be determined]

fast day before the Sund with his team and having other horses at work on sd Day".  
After hearing his testimony, however, the Session restored his privileges; 1 Feb 
1808, was charged with having had "carnal knowledge", on two occasions, of Maria 
Smith, daughter of James Smith; 13 Feb 1808, Session heard testimony on the charge 
by Jeremiah Capron?, Mrs. Smith [step-mother of Maria] and Mrs. McClaughry [wife of 
John R.] none of which supported the charge.  Mention is made of Kitty Smith, a 
sister of Maria.  Testimony 	indicates that Maria did not have a reputation for 
veracity.  There is no indication of any action by the Session; 5 Jun 1828, attended 
a meeting of the Session as a member; minutes show him attending most Session 
meetings between the preceeding date and 25 May 1841; 16 Jun 1832, Session found 
baseless a 	report [the nature of which was not specified] concerning his testimony 
in a suit between Alexander McCall and Robert McClaughry; 25 May 1841, Session was 
told of a report circulating concerning a financial dispute between John R. 
McClaughry and Messr. John Cowan and James Grant, Jr., which had resulted in a civil 
suit. McClaughry was reported to have obtained a loan from Cowan and Grant on the 
condition that he would pay a debt owed by his son, James R. McClaughry, but had 
then invoked the 	usury laws when they tried to collect   McClaughry acknowledged 
the facts and the Session took the 	matter under consideration; 3 Jun 1841, he was 
requested "to suspend himself from the Ensuing Sacramental occasion" because of this 
report and did so; 16 Jun 1841, asked the Session if they intended to take any 
action on his case but the matter was postponed; 17 Sep 1841, Session considered his 
case but McClaughry asked for "declinature (as he consider-d himself prejudged by 
some members [of the] Session) which the Session unanimously granted"; 2 Jun 1847, 
appeared before the Session asking "what they would advise him to do in his case " 
After discussion the Session decided the case was not regularly before them; 27 Sep 
1848, appeared before the Session to ask what they were going to do in his case  No 
action was taken; 22 May 1849, appeared before the Session once again.  Session 
declined to take any action, in accordance with a decision of the Synod, until

WHITE, Alexander   7 Jun 1836, appeared before the Session on "a Report of his being 
Intoxicated".  He acknowledged the charge and was sentenced to be publicly 
admonished; 30 May 1837, was suspended from church privileges because of 
intoxication; 21 Sep 1837, failed to attend a meeting of the Session as requested

WHITE, Hugh   25 May 1853, examined and admitted to communion

WHITFORD, John   [see BLACK, William]; 12 Sep 1843, made application to be admitted 
to communion but was not accepted; 12 Jun 1851, he and his wife [her name not given] 
requested restoration of church privileges, which had been suspended on charges of 
the "sin and scandal of antinuptial fornication", but  action was deferred; 19 Jun 
1851, after professing sorrow and repentance, they were publicly rebuked and then 
restored to church privileges; 12 Jun 1854, he was charged with intemperance and 
requested to "keep back from sealing ordinances
