While checking my photos taken at a cemetery in Hamden, NY I found the following:
Homer R. Howland b. Dec 22 1840 in Hamden
son of George Fisher Howland and Nancy ( Patterson or Hanford)
Homer was in the civil war and died June 14 1864 in Donaldsonville, Ascenion, LA. Cause of death Typhoid fever.
NY clerks records in Ancestry show he was buried in Donaldsonville, LA
The cemetery stone is clear but his unit is faint but appears as Co. L
11th NY Cav. Location: Delancey cemetery on private property.
There is conflict with his records and some show he was with the Delaware Co., 144th Inf. Homer appears to be a forgotten soldier. He appears in the 1850 and 1860 census for Hamden occup., teacher. --Dewey A. Robinson
